Solar Man

A while ago I struggled to solve a problem with the solar panels on our VW Crafter Campervan. Not very technical minded myself, I phoned and also drove around the greater Preoria area, earnestly seeking a solution. The different possibilities offered to me (one price tag close to R2000?!), just confused me even more. Googling different pIaces, I ended up at Solar Man (Equestria) were JP attended to my problem. His suggested solution made sense, and over a two day period he went out of his way to get the system going, and also charged our (at that point depleted) battery. Since I was passing through, he didn't even want to accept any payment. Way to go, guys!

In 2021, Solar Man installed SCHUBART-branded gel batteries and an inverter. At the time, their website described the SCHUBART AGM GEL batteries as "designed with 12+ years service life". These claims remain visible on their website to this day (as of 2025). Within less than five years of normal use, all four batteries failed completely. When I approached Solar Man for assistance, I was informed that they only offer a one-year warranty—information not disclosed during the sales process and inconsistent with industry norms, where manufacturers typically provide guarantees of 5–10 years. This is particularly concerning given that these products were advertised as being "designed for a 12-year lifespan." The SCHUBART batteries supplied carried a "CE" mark, which ordinarily indicates that a product meets European Union (EU) health, safety, and environmental protection standards. However, upon investigation, the serial number (HZ202105) printed on the batteries does not correspond with any registered or traceable EU certification database or conformity documentation. Further research suggests that the "SCHUBART" brand may be a private label or rebranded product, raising further concerns about transparency and traceability. My experience engaging with Solar Man was negative. The manager and sales staff responded in an aggressive and hostile manner, including threatening legal action when I raised my concerns online. If you are considering purchasing from Solar Man SA, I recommend obtaining written confirmation of warranty terms, manufacturer details, and proof of compliance in advance, and exercising caution around marketing claims that may not be honoured.
