The Sun Exchange
6.2

The Sun Exchange, based in Cape Town, offers a unique platform connecting retail investors with solar energy projects across Africa. Their model aims to democratize renewable energy investment, allowing individuals to purchase virtual solar cells and earn returns based on electricity generation. However, recent shifts in their operational strategy have raised concerns regarding liquidity and investor flexibility.

While the company's commitment to expanding sustainable energy is commendable, the evolving structure, including a transition towards institutional investors and limitations on cell resale, warrants careful consideration. Investors should thoroughly understand the long-term investment nature and associated withdrawal fees before participating.

Don't waste your money! ... Invested R6k and when they had to sell because the project wouldn't continue I only got back R99 Biggest waste of time and money.

This is the most disappointing investment I’ve made. The concept behind The Sun Exchange was good and noble, but a few years in, things started to fall apart. In some cases, project owners failed to pay for their solar cells, resulting in missed payments to retail investors and The Sun Exchange having to take legal action. In hindsight, perhaps their model should have focused on institutional investors from the outset, rather than relying on crowdfunding and building a brand through retail investors. Although my investment was relatively small, I regret to say that those funds would likely have been better placed elsewhere — even in cryptocurrency.

Sold a product that sounded amazing allowing individuals to buy stakes in solar investments. Then one day decided not profitable selling all the installations to which th investors lost a large stake of their investment. Now they have 1 site where the instalation has been stolen twice so no revenue coming in there. And another thats under legal action that dont think they will get any real resolution too. Terrible investment steer clear of sun exchange

Absolutely terrible experience. Initially a great idea but went downhill rapidly, lots of installation issues plus non payments by clients meant returns were nowhere near promised. Now they are moving from individual investors to institutional investors meaning a forced sale of individuals solar cells at whatever price they negotiate. Also now unable to withdraw earnings in ZAR unless you have a South African bank account despite them accepting payments in ZAR for cells from credit cards or Revolut for years. Absolutely horrible company, started off so brightly but recently have sunk to the depths

I commend Sun Exchange for driving so many renewable projects. I do however believe, for most retail investors (regular persons), it is not obvious that you are unable to sell your investment. If you purchase cells, you can never sell them again, unlike with a regular savings deposit where you can release your initial capital with interest. So just keep in mind that you wont be able to release your capital - I am not sure if you are able to redeem some capital after 20 years. Furthermore, Sun Exchange does not offer any interest on funds accrued. The reason for not earning interest is not obvious to me. If you would like to earn interest, then you would need to transfer the funds to your own regular bank account (at an additional fee withdrawal fee of R7.50 if you are willing to wait a week, or R100 for next business day withdrawal). I feel the withdrawal fees could be waivered seeing that Sun Exchange probably earns interest on your funds. The combination of not earning interest and paying withdrawal fees, seems a bit unreasonable to me. Other than that, I think Sun Exchange is a great organisation.

I’m updating my previous positive review because my experience with this company changed dramatically. They abruptly forced individual investors, including myself, to sell our solar cell ownership, often at a loss, while a large corporate buyer was given the opportunity to select only the most profitable assets. This left smaller investors holding the weaker positions and losing out on the returns we were originally promised. What concerns me even more is that the company continued selling solar cells to new individual investors long after they had internally moved away from that model, without clearly disclosing what was coming. This created a situation where many of us were placed in an unavoidable and unfavorable position. The overall handling felt deeply misleading, and the decisions they made ultimately benefited a major buyer at the direct expense of the people who supported them from the beginning.
